1944-2023 Sarah J. Peterson-Thiel, 78, of Rib Lake, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at home, surrounded by family, under the care of Hope Hospice. A funeral service for Sarah took place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Hemer-Pickerign Funeral Home, Rib Lake, with Pastor Bob Giese officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was at Hemer-Pickerign Funeral Home in Rib Lake on Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Sarah was born on Oct. 3, 1944 to Keith and Selma (Blank) Beam. She married Edward Paul Peterson and he preceded her in death. She was a hard worker and worked as a cook for Tombstone, Florena’s Supper Club, Mr. B’s, Meadow Farms, Marathon Cheese, and as a security guard at Weather Shield. She also owned a Lawn Mowing Business. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and family get togethers. She had a big heart and loved taking care of people. Sarah is survived by her second husband, Ed Thiel; children, Gayle (Gary) Hoefferle of Rib Lake, Paul (Tammy) Peterson of Medford, and Ricky (Joy) Peterson of Whitewater; grandchildren, Gary (Jessica Taylor) Hoefferle, Nikki (Joel) Sosa, Jamie (Jen Steen) Pester, Robert Peterson, Edward Peterson, Jenny Wicke, Hunter Peterson, and Tazia Peterson; great-grandchildren, Maniah and Nathia Sosa, Charity Pester, Madison Pester, Kaitlyn Pester, Tyra Wicke, Kierra Wicke, Talon Peterson, Carmen Peterson, and Payton Peterson; sister, Sally Strebe of Adams. Sarah is further survived by other family and friends. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; and siblings, Violet, Kerry, Sherry, Hiram, and Rosetta. Helen Hitt Gelhaus


1926-2023 Helen Hitt Gelhaus, 97, of Medford, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2023, in her home while under the care of her family and Hope Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 20 at Holy Rosary Parish in Medford with the Very Rev. Patrick McConnell officiating. Visitation from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. A burial service will be held the following day at 1 p.m. at Clay Banks Cemetery in Door County. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Catholic School of your choice. Helen was born Feb. 1, 1926, to Henry ‘Rube’ and Ella (Moore) Hitt. She was the eighth of 11 children and grew up in Sturgeon Bay and Clay Banks. She later moved to Milwaukee, where she attended Miss Brown’s School of Business and met her spouse, Edward L. Gelhaus. They were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, and later moved to Medford. They were later divorced. Helen cared deeply for raising her family. In addition to being involved in many of her children’s activities, including as a 4H Leader in both Medford and Molitor. She enjoyed golf, bowling, bridge, canasta, spending time at the lake and returning frequently to Door County. After ‘retirement’ Helen worked and cared for many Black River Industries clients. She was a volunteer at the Medford Public Library, Medford Area Public School reading buddy program, Indianhead Action Agency, and a member of the Holy Rosary Council of Catholic Women, Medford Hospital Auxiliary, and League of Women Voters. As a member of the American Legion Auxiliary she helped support veterans in the community. She also showed her love and concern for the less fortunate by making multiple mission trips to Guatemala in her 70’s. In her later years, you could find Helen knitting away through thousands of yards of yarn. In her natural giving spirit, shewouldoftenknitsocksorhandwarmersforhomeless veterans or gifts for her family. Helen also enjoyed traveling with her children and grandchildren. Her family will remember her as a welcoming person, who was always ready with a quick-witted comment. She always kept her faith and her family at the forefront of everything she did. Helen instilled many of her wonderful qualities into her family, and she will be missed dearly. Helen is survived by her children, Tom (Mary) Gelhaus, Ann (Trent) Harris, Fred (Barb) Gelhaus, Maggie (Steve) Hart and Katie (Tim) Zenner. She is additionally survived by 16 grandchildren, their spouses, and 25 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and her brother and sister-in-law Richard (Marge) Hitt. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her former spouse; her son, Dan Gelhaus; her brothers, George, Joseph, John & Chuck Hitt; and her sisters, Bernadine Andre, Margaret Nebel, Julia Doris Schmidt, Kathleen Holt-Ryan, and Mary Frome. Jerry Doane Krug

1946-2023 Jerry Doane Krug, 76, of Perkinstown, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 surrounded by family. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee. The Rev. Phil Beukema will officiate. Interment to follow at the Perkinstown Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen is entrusted with the arrangements. Jerry was born Sept. 14, 1946 to Ethel Stevenson and Andrew Krug from Halloway. When he was just 12 years old he drove his mom 12 miles to go to work and also worked on the family farm, also set pins at the Owen bowling alley. Even from a young age Jerry was always such a hard worker. He graduated from Owen High School in 1965. In his early years, Jerry raced snowmobiles and won many trophies. He met the love of his life, Susan Ogle at an Owen football game. They got married on November 11th, 1967. They moved to Milwaukee where he worked for Payne and Dolan Road Construction until he retired. He worked on the road all week but still found things to fix and stay busy around the family Pheasant Farm on the weekends. Jerry and Susie were blessed with four children. Kurt, Joe, Jason, and Jenny and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he loved to spend time with whether it was out on the pontoon fishing or getting together for weekly family dinners. Jerry and Susie also loved to travel. They would spend time at their time-share in St. Martins during the winter and traveled to Alaska in their RV during the summer. Jerry would insist on a fish boil for all their family and friends whenever they would return home. Aside from traveling Jerry enjoyed going on hunting trips for elk, moose, and other animals. Jerry is survived by his wife, Susie; his sisters, Annable Neitzel, Beatrice Decker, Jane Mathews; and his brother, Dale Krug; his children, Kurt (Della) Krug, Joseph (Bobbi Jo) Krug, Jason (Amy), Jenny (Paul) Rothmeier. Jerry has 12 grandkids and seven great-grandkids. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Ethel; his brothers, Dean Krug, Bill Krug, and George Krug; and sister, Darlene Wisniewski. Rosella “Rose” Mravik


1934-2023 Rosella “Rose” Mravik, 88, formerly of South Milwaukee, passed away on July 3, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Luxemburg. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 10, 2023 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church-Gilman with Father Madanu Sleeva officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery-Lublin. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service on Monday. Plombon Funeral Service assisted the family. She was born on Nov. 4, 1934 the daughter of the late Ernest and Sylvia (Oats) Webster. Rosella married Valentine Mravik on Aug. 8, 1953 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church-Lublin. The couple moved to South Milwaukee soon thereafter. Rosella was a homemaker and a sales associate for Sears for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, often traveling to visit family members. She spent her summers gardening, canning, and baking. A family favorite was fried bread and cinnamon rolls. Rose enjoyed crocheting, painting, and many other crafts. She never met a craft she did not enjoy. She and Valentine began crafting together, making family Christmas gifts, and greeting cards. They enjoyed attending local farmer’s markets and craft fairs. Rose loved going to the casino, having lunch with the Sears ladies, and bumming with her friend Peggy. Most of all she loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Dale (Linda) Mravik of Lublin, Delbert (Diana) Mravik of South Milwaukee, Rodene (Michael) Bulley of Adamstown, Md., Bonnie (Carl) Onesti of Luxemburg, Kathern Mravik of Franklin, and Sylvia (Cary) Fischer of South Milwaukee; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and one due in August; one sister, Mary (Joe) Thorgerson of Jump River; and brothers, Leland (Sylvia) Webster and Marvin (Theresa) Webster both of Gilman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Valentine (2015); a grandson, David Mravik; a son in law, Scott Winter; and her siblings, Donald, Stanley, Rodger, Ivan, Joan Morris and Gordon. Richard “Dick” J. Slobodnik

Richard “Dick” J. Slobodnik


1935-2023 Richard “Dick” J. Slobodnik, age 88, of Withee, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center in Owen. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2023 at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen. Rev. Nancy Amacher will officiate. Interment to follow at the Maplehurst Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Lublin American Legion Post #547, Owen American Legion Post #123, Owen-Withee Vets Club and the Thorp VFW Post #9057. Family and friends are welcome from 2 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Dick was born on May 2, 1935, the son of John and Clara (Crystal) Slobodnik in Gary, Ind. He served in the US Army stationed in Germany. On Oct. 15, 1955, Richard was united in marriage to Dolores Stangret in Stanley. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 2018. They lived in Chicago for eight years and in 1965, they moved back to Withee. He worked for Wisconsin Gas Company for many years until his retirement. Dick was the commander of the Lublin American Legion Post #547 for many years and a member of the Owen-Withee Vets Club. He was very handy and enjoyed woodworking including remodeling the legion hall in Lublin. He also played in the Friz Band and had a DJ service, DJ Sound Connection. Richard is survived by his four children, Randy of Hartland, Bruce (Debbie) of Chisholm, Minn., John of Wausau and Julie (Steve) Christophersen of Owen; four grandchildren, Nicolette Slobodnik, Samantha (Andrew) Barabe, Orion (Ariel) Slobodnik and Jared (Macie) Jensen; and five great-grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother-in-law, Bob Schara of Cornell; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores; his daughter, Roxanne Kay; his granddaughter, Jesse Jensen; his sister, Delores Stock; and his brother, Larry.
