Athens senior Cooper Diedrich has 200 free tickets available for any Athens basketball fans who want to watch him play in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 5 All-Star game this summer.
Diedrich will play on the Division 5 White team in its game at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
Maple Grove board
Maple Grove Charter School in the town of Hamburg has three positons open on its board of directors, which are available starting in June.
As a director, a person would have the responsibility to enhance student learners’ education by supporting and promoting Maple Grove School’s mission, overseeeing goals of the charter contract, reviewing reports on student learning and communicating with school leadership.
Maple Grove Charter School board of director term limits are three years. To apply, a person needs to submit a letter of interest and their resume showcasing their strengths and experience to Trina Lutzke at tlutzke@athens1.org by Tuesday, May 31.
People who apply for the positions then should plan to attend the annual meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 13, to introduce themselves to the board.
May Book Club
The public is welcome to stop by the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch during the month of May to pick up a copy of the book titled, “Peaches” by author Helen Oyeyemi, along with discussion questions.
People with questions on the May Book Club can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.
Grab & Go kit
During the month of May, adults can pick up a free Grab & Go kit from any of the nine Marathon County Public Library locations.
The kit will contain supplies for making seed bombs for planting annual and perennial wildflowers.
Kits are free and available while supplies last. People wanting more information can contact the MCPL main headquarters in Wausau at 715-261-7230.
Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 12 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead was played. Steve Klockziem won the first game and Andy Hoeft took second place. Sally Whaples won the second game and Pat Frank placed second. Wil Strack received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Graduations
The Athens High School Class of 2022 graduation ceremony is at 2 p.m. this Saturday, May 21, on the football field.
Athens Middle School’s eighth grade graduation ceremony is at 6:30 p.m. this Monday, May 23, in the middle/ high school gym.
Open house
The Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Service will hold an open house for the public on Saturday, June 4, from 8-11 a.m. during the Athens FFA June Dairy Breakfast at Memorial Park.
Progress Athens
Progress Athens is an initiative to raise donations for the efforts to purchase and renovate the old US Bank building located on Alfred Street, complete long overdue updates to the Community Hall bathrooms and to enhance the existing municipal building space to provide opportunity to be further utilized.
Contributions in any amount, trade-skill, materials or supplies are welcomed. Monetary donations can be made payable to Progress Athens and directed to the account established at Forward Bank.
