On Jan. 21, Maple Grove Charter School in the Athens School District celebrated its second quarter C.R.I.S.P. award winners.
Like many schools, Maple Grove has key character traits its students and staff live and breathe everyday. Those five character traits follow the CRISP acronym: C represents craftsmanship, R means respect, I symbolizes integrity, S stands for stewardship and P is for perseverance.
Each grade-level teacher selected the following students for very specific reasons: In Ms. Riehle’s kindergarten class, Harper Mootz was chosen because she is always willing to help a friend or teacher who is in need. She also shows stewardship by cleaning up not only after herself, but also for others. She constantly pushes herself to learn more.
Ms. Riehle also selected Jordan Natzke because he always listens and follows directions. He also has great enthusiasm for learning and is a role model to his classmates.
From Ms. Etten’s first grade class, Airia Floistad was selected because she has been acknowledged with Fox Tails for doing all of the CRISP traits this past month. One Fox Tail specifically indicated she perseveres both academically and socially and is able to fix the unfixable.
In addition to Airia, Justin Servi was selected for his tremendous leadership skills within the classroom. He was described by his teacher as being determined, having exceptional excitement and being a safe and honest person that one can count on.
Within Ms. Narloch’s second grade, Cally Points was chosen for showing craftsmanship in her daily work and for respectfully treating her classmates and teachers with kindness. She has a contagious smile and never gives up, especially when something is challenging for her.
Ben Grueneberg was also chosen because he puts time and care into his daily assignments and his craftsmanship is evident. Ben also is a learner who never gives up, especially when he is working on tricky math problems. He has time management in place and helps others when he is finished.
In Ms. Barrick’s third grade, Adelia Hanson was selected for her technology expertise, motivation, willingness to try new things and ability to problem- solve situations because of her ability to teach others what she knows in a way that is easily understood. She is a true role model.
Adalyn Graap was also selected because she’s an extremely hard worker who is constantly wanting to do more for herself, for her classmates and even for her teachers. She truly cares about her school craftsmanship because she knows that “fast and sloppy” won’t get her the progress and success she strives for.
From Ms. Zondlo’s fourth grade, Fynn Beasley was chosen for his perseverance and integrity he displays on a daily basis. Fynn shows incredible perseverance in his academic work and he shows such pride in his work. He is also looking to better himself and will take his time to complete all his work with quality craftsmanship.
The second CRISP award recipient went to Athaliah West-Hanson. Athaliah has a positive attitude in everything she does. She demonstrates compassion and respect for others every day. She has made such an impact on the classroom and to bring that ray of sunshine to the class.
Finally, within Ms. Szutkowski’s fifth grade room, Allie Kohnhorst was selected because she is the picture of perseverance. No matter the subject, she’s got her head down and is working diligently to do her very best. Allie has a positive attitude and is a delightful addition to her classroom.
Also, Daphne Ruffi was chosen for being a leader in her class and school. She shows craftsmanship often as she takes pride in her work and goes beyond expectations to achieve her best.
Congratulations to all of these second quarter winners. They are now in an elite group with the following first quarter winners: Jackson Skerven, Coraline Kane, Cassidy Beaty, Levi Hirn, James Ochodnicky, Willow Stieber, Olive Primm, Charlie Neske, Billie Jo Grueneberg, Joe Giese, Wes Ochodnicky and Hazel Klockziem.
Candlelight walk
The Athens Area Trail Association’s seventh annual Candlelight/Moonlight Walk will be held this Saturday, Feb. 12, from 7-9 p.m.
People are welcome to walk, snowshoe or cross country ski the approximatley 2-1/2 miles of groomed candlelight trails at Erbach Park during this event.
Admission is free and preregistration is not required for people to attend this event. The public can also enjoy food for purchase in the shelter, sponsored by the Athens Boy Scouts, and a giant campfire at the Candlelight/Moonlight Walk.
Donations are greatly appreciated to aid in winter trail manintenance costs.
College notes
Cade Ellenbecker of Athens graduated from UW-Oshkosh during its 57th midyear commencement held at Kolf Sports Center.
Ellenbecker earned a bachelor of business of administration, management degree.
Bailey Harding, Guyler Luther and Jacob Stange of Athens earned degrees at UW-Eau Claire’s December commencement ceremony. Harding graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a bachelor of science degree in communication sciences and disorders, Luther with a bachelor of businesss administration, business finance degree and Stange with a bachelor of business administration, accounting degree.
COVID dashboard
Athens Public Schools reported four positive cases of COVID-19 as of Feb. 7, out of 552 staff and students.
There are two students with positive COVID-19 cases in Athens middle/high school, one student at Athens Elementary School and one school district staff member.
All students and staff who tested positive for COVID-19 are in isolation at home.
One hundred and two staff and students have tested positive for COVID-19 since Aug. 31, 2021.
Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 3 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Three games of Sheepshead was played. Butch Boris won the first game and Alvira Henrichs took second place. Andy Hoeft won the second game and Bitsy Ewan placed second. Doc Wiese won the third game and Norbert Lake took second place. Ceil Frank received low score.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
