The Marathon County Public Library Athens Branch will reopen with limited services this Monday, June 22, by appointment.

Athens library will be open the following hours by appointment: Mondays 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.; Tuesdays, 1-5 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.; Thursdays, 1-5 p.m. and Fridays, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The library will also still offer curbside pickup of items from 2-4 p.m. on Mondays, 5-7 p.m. on Tuesdays, 2-4 p.m. on Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m. on Thursdays and 2-4 p.m. on Fridays.

People need to call the Athens library at 715-257-7292 to make an appointment to visit the library during its limited hours, or to request curbside pickup.

College notes

The following Athens college students were awarded to the dean’s list of the 2019-20 academic year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: Morgan Bloch and Sarah Kafka, College of Letters and Science and Gabriella Janke, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Lane Nicholds, College of Engineering, was named to the dean’s honor list.

Sierra Schug of Athens received high honors during the spring 2020 semester at UWGreen Bay. Valarya Tennison of Athens was named to the Dean’s list for the spring 2020 semester at UW-Superior.

Basics of plants

The Marathon County Public Library and UW-Extension will offer a virtual class on growing ornamental plants from 3-4:30 p.m. this Tuesday, June 23, via the Zoom app.

People can attend the session virtually via webcam or by phone. This event is free but registration is required. People wanting to register should call 715-261-1230.

Fireworks are still on

Athens Lions Club will have the fireworks at dusk on Friday, July 3. All other activities are canceled for the safety of the Athens community.

A livestream will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, to announce the winners of the raffle.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from any Athens Lions Club member, or at Balz Inn or Forever Remembered in Athens. People and businesses can also make a monetary donation for the fireworks at either Balz Inn or Forevever Remembered.

No band concerts

The Athens Old Timers Band concerts are not occurring for the foreseeable future unless the COVID-19 pandemic improves.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on June 11 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead was played. Steve Klockziem won the first game and Norbert Lake took second place. Butch Boris won the second game and Ceil Frank placed second. Jan Lake received low score.

The Senior Citizens card group will play cards again at 1 p.m. this Thursday, June 18, at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market is held every Tuesday from 4-7 p.m., at Memorial Park.
