Distinguished driver

Tony Gajewski of Athens has been nominated by the National Association of Small Trucking Companies (NASTC) for its driver of the year award.

Gajewski has driven for Fischer Truck & Bus Service for over 20 years. He’s been a professional driver for over 35 years and has driven over 4,110,000 accident free miles.

“As a nominee for the award, Tony Gajewski joins a very elite group that represent the very best of our 130,000 drivers,” according to Buster Anderson, executive vice president of the NASTC.

NASTC represents over 10,000 trucking companies in the U.S. and Canada.

“Fischer Truck & Bus Service is very proud of their drivers and should be very proud of themselves at well,” Anderson said. “It says a lot about a company when they can attract and keep employees of this caliber.”

College graduate

Kyla Luther of Athens graduated from Upper Iowa University in August with a bachelor of science degree in human services.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Oct. 24 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won the first game and Sally Whaples took second place. Norbert Lake won the second game and Bitsy Ewan placed second. Bernice Passehl received low score. The Senior Citizens card group will next meet on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. in the Athens Area fire and Ambulance Hall.

Library event

People of all ages can show their creativity by designing and making their own paper mache bowl using recycled magazines, newspapers and books at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline Street.

The public can drop by the Athens library any time it’s open between Monday, Nov. 4, and Thursday, Nov. 7, to participate.

This event is free and all supplies will be provided. People who have questions on this event can call the library at 715-257-7292.

Weekly knitting

Adults can practice their knitting, crocheting and more on a weekly basis with new sessions of Needle Arts afternoons from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday until Dec. 31 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline Street.
