Purchase of first legacy stone pavers approved

Plans are in the works to purchase the first batch of legacy stones for the Holcombe Area Veterans Memorial, after planning committee members voted in favor of a vendor, during a meeting Dec. 16.
So far, 27 legacy stones were purchased by individuals, groups and businesses in the area. Committee chairperson Jim Mataczynski proposed the group purchase the 27 etched stones, plus 58 blank stones, with the legacy stone balance.
Tim Marshall, committee member, asked if the cost of the 8x8 stones would be less, than the cost of the 12x12 stones. Mataczynski says they will be less, but is not sure how much less, so he figured conservatively.
“If I figure a little extra, it’s going to be better for us,” said Mataczynski.
Vice chairperson Dave Conrad presented two vendor options for the stone pavers – Johnson Monument and Stone Services, both in Chippewa Falls.
Mataczynski explained they had previously gotten a third bid from Maurina Monument Service, but they withdrew themselves from consideration, after their prices went up significantly.
“I spent a lot of time on this, because I wanted to make sure that it got done right,” said Conrad.
He says he reached out to a number of different people, including the project engineer and Kay Anason from the Highground Veterans Memorial Park.
“She just gave a huge, huge endorsement/recommendation for Stone Services,” said Conrad, adding Anason told him the company is easy to work with and the stones have good uniformity.
Conrad also says Stone Services are known for engraving deep into the stones, which makes the etchings last longer, without painting or touch-ups.
When it comes to the price, Stone Services also came in lower than Johnson Monument.
Conrad also says Stone Services gave tips on how to store the stones until they are ready for installation and gave the group recommendations for who could lay the stones.
Pam Guthman, committee member, asked if the company would stand by a stone, if something happens to them. Conrad says it sounds like they will stand by the stones, to a point.
The committee voted in favor of purchasing 27 etched and 58 blank stones from Stone Services, before prices inevitably go up.
“Where we can find opportunities to save money, we really need to take advantage of that when we can,” said Conrad.
Following the regular meeting, planning committee members thanked those who have helped the memorial project get off the ground, with certificates of appreciation.
