Get rid of items with an extra pick-up day

By Ginna Young

Each fall, the City of Cornell sponsors a special garbage pick-up day from Waste Management, at no additional cost to residents. This year, the extra pick-up is set for Thursday, Oct. 14, but residents are asked not to place items at the curb before Monday, Oct. 11.

“The earlier you put debris out, the more likely it is that if we have any wind, it’ll be pushed into the road,” said Derek Braun, superintendent of utilities/city works.

Braun pointed out that if people go through what’s set out to see if there is anything they can use, it could make a bigger mess than is necessary and get in the way. He also said if people keep the extra refuse contained in one spot for a shorter period of time, it’s less likely animals will string things about.

“It’s just better to put garbage out closer to the time of pick-up, just like your normal garbage,” said Braun.

It’s also against city ordinances, which could force a resident to move it twice to take it off the curb and could even result in fines.

During the special pick-up, Cornell residents may dispose of two yards of garbage, per household, at no extra cost. Examples of two yards of garbage are one couch or two stuffed chairs; one box spring and mattress; or 10 miscellaneous garbage bags. Residents choosing to dispose of more than 2 yards, will be asked to pay additional disposal fees or risk not having everything picked up.

No one may dispose of concrete block, brick, dirt, shingles, construction debris, liquids, paints, solvents, car batteries, gas engines, household hazardous waste, yard waste or electronics.

All items must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m., the day of pick-up.
