Swanson said she was in shock to be chosen, while those who know her, weren’t at all surprised. In front of a packed house as part of the Cornell Community Fair, June 19, the annual Citizen of the Year Award was given to someone who makes a difference in the community. The recognition is awarded by the mayor, who takes suggestions throughout the year, as to whom should be the recipient.

For this year’s recipient, mayor Mark Larson made his choice, based on the time and money, that person spends by donating and volunteering, with events throughout Cornell, and the surrounding areas.

As part of Camaraderie Club, the person in question is active and instrumental in sending care packages to the troops overseas who have local ties, helping with the many events put on by the Cornell Area Betterment Association (CABA) and running the Memory Cafe for caregivers.

Larson says his choice was an easy one, as the 2021 honoree, continues to raise the bar.

“And one that stands out the most to me,” he said, “is she’s a strong reminder to each and every one of us, that we never, ever forget our missing people, until they’re safely home.”

If there was any doubt in people’s minds that Larson was talking about Kathy Swanson, it was laid to rest with the astonished, “No,” that slipped between her lips and the tears welling in her eyes.

Swanson, although emotional, addressed the crowd gathered, saying she doesn’t expect a pat on the back for anything she does.

“If I see a need, I try to meet it,” said Swanson. “I think that’s something we should all try to do.”
