Claude and Mary Jane Duke take over ownership of Drywood Tavern in rural Cadott, after the couple fell in love with the bar when visiting it during a Packers game. In taking over the bar, the two promise to uphold a long tradition of serving pork steak dumplings to customers.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Cornell will have a dry cleaning service, with Carolyn’s Classic Cleaners from Rice Lake, dropping off/ picking up clothes at Rustic Elegance on Main Street. Rustic Elegance owner Jessica Waite will ensure shipments are labeled correctly.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Cadott freshman Russ Peloquin makes it to his first State wrestling tournament, competing in the 103-pound weight class. Peloquin was the lone Hornets qualifier for State, after placing second at a Sectional meet.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Gas is obviously a hot commodity in Cornell, with 400-600 gallons taken from six trucks parked near the office of Wisconsin Truss. In the same part of the industrial park, someone also tampered with a 200-gallon tank at the Woodland Lumber Company.
50 Years Ago – 1971
The gavel is passed to Mrs. Pat Parker, as she becomes the newest president of the Cadott Chamber of Commerce for the remainder of the year. Parker takes over for outgoing president Leonard Rykal.
60 Years Ago – 1961
The Cornell American Legion Weinsch-Gilbert-Patten Post 353 marks its 40th year, with several charter members receiving pins to commemorate the event. In a special celebration, state Commander Marvin W. Roth speaks about the milestone to members of the post.
100 Years Ago – 1921
H. C. Hall, jeweler, offers a grab bag sale, where patrons can try their luck to receive valuable articles for only $1. Included up for chance, are ladies gold ring sets, gentlemen’s watches and phonographs.
