CEREMONIES MEMORIAL DAY
Area communities and The Highground have announced their plans to remember our country’s fallen soldiers through Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 29. The public is welcome to attend any of these events.
Greenwood – The American Legion Wallis-Hinker-Brux Post 238 will host a service at Greenwood High School at 10 a.m. The guest speaker will be David Boe, outgoing Greenwood American Legion commander and Wisconsin American Legion Seventh District first vice commander. Following the school ceremony, there will be a poppy drop and gun salute at the Greenwood City Cemetery at approximately 10:15 a.m. Next will be a short service and gun salute at the Catholic cemetery at approximately 10:30 a.m., a service and salute at the North Side Cemetery at approximately 11 a.m. and a service and salute at the Catholic cemetery in Willard at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Greenwood American Legion will serve a drive-thru charcoal chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 108 S. Main St. for a fee.
Loyal – The Loyal American Legion Post 175 and Auxiliary Unit 175 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at the Loyal cemetery at 10 a.m. The Grand Army of the Republic flag will be passed down from the graduating senior class to the incoming senior class. The Loyal High School Band will perform and there will be a moment of silence followed by a gun salute and the playing of “Taps.” Following the ceremony, the Loyal American Legion will serve a free lunch at 302 N. Union St.
Neillsville – Observances will be led by the American Legion Haugen-Richmond Post 73 and Auxiliary Unit 73, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2241 and VFW Post 2241 Auxiliary. The day will begin with the Poppy Princess coronation ceremony at the Neillsville American Legion Post 73 at approximately 8:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a wreath toss ceremony at the Grand Avenue bridge to commemorate those lost at sea. The Neillsville High School Band will play and Legion members will fire a gun salute. After that, Legion members and Boy Scouts will march from the armory to the Neillsville City Cemetery. There will be a ceremony at the cemetery at 11:30 a.m., including guest speaker Maggie Gelhaus, retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 military intelligence specialist. The band will again play at the cemetery and there will be a gun salute.
After the ceremony, the public is invited to a cookout at the American Legion, 6 Boon Boulevard, with meals available for a freewill donation. The Highground Honor Ride motorcyclists will also gather at the Legion and leave at 1:45 p.m. to ride through Neillsville to The Highground Veterans Memorial Park, W7031 Ridge Road, Neillsville. At 3 p.m., The Highground will host a Memorial Day ceremony. The public is invited to join in greeting the riders at the park and/or the ceremony.
