The Highground plans May 21 reunion day for Vietnam veterans

The Highground veterand memorial park near Neillsville has received many “calls for help” from spouses, family members and friends of veterans who are having difficulty managing PTS (post-traumatic stress).

A Vietnam War Veterans Reunion will be held at The Highground on May 21 from noon – 5 p.m. Vietnam veterans and families are invited to join the informal gathering. In addition to providing an opportunity for Vietnam veterans to meet and share stories, there will be a lunch served and a number of displays to visit.

A Vietnam War UH-1H Huey helicopter is planned to land at The Highground (weather permitting and landing time TBA, most likely around 10 a.m.). There will also be a trailered UH-1H static display onsite, courtesy of VVA 331.

While at The Highground, veterans will be able to enjoy a tour of the park and visit the current museum exhibition which includes “WI Remembers – A Face For Every Name” Vietnam War Memorial, all in the company of fellow Vietnam veterans.

Patriot K9s of Wausau (patriotk9s.org) will be at The Highground with a booth presenting their successful program of connecting and training veterans and service/ therapy dogs. The Highground invites visitors to help “Fill the Footlocker” by donating items for the year-round support of homeless and transitioning veterans. Items needed include new or gently used blue jeans and t-shirts, new socks, new underwear (for men and women), queen and double sheets, towels (bath, hand, dish) and washcloths.

The Highground is honored to be preserving and sharing the experiences, photographs and interviews of Vietnam veterans in the ongoing “We Were There – Vietnam War” Project. The endeavor will result in a permanent exhibit of banners and memorabilia along with a virtual exhibit of interviews, photographs and writings. The project will include the experiences of the family and loved ones who were “back home” during the Vietnam War as well as the experiences of families of veterans who have been lost due to their service from the effects of Agent Orange, PTS and other injuries. There will be opportunities during the reunion to submit information and/or be interviewed.

The Reunion itinerary is: -- Noon – 1:30 p.m: Lunch will be served at the museum -- 1 p.m: Guided tour of The Highground – Meet at the central flag pole -- 2-pm: Interview opportunity and information about the “We Were There – Vietnam War” Project – Museum Military vehicle owners are invited to display their vehicle(s) at The Highground on this day.
