Police and fire department employees who are deemed essential workers will first be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting Jan. 18, according to Marathon County Health Department spokeswoman Judy Burrows. She said these employees can register for vaccine shots by contacting three vaccine providers in the county, Marshfield Clinic Health System, Ascension, Bridge Community Health Clinic, Aspirus Occupational Health and Trig’s Pharmacy.

Information about vaccine registration is listed on the health department’s website.

Burrows said that vaccination of police and fire workers represents the start of Phase 1B vaccination of all essential workers.

Burrows said it is up to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to say just who is an “essential worker” and expects the Wisconsin Disaster Medical Advisory Committee to finalize a list of occupations covered under the definition.

Burrows said the county health department has no role in determining who is an essential worker.

After essential workers are vaccinated, the next priority group are people over age 65 or people with underlying medical conditions. This is a Phase 1C population.

Frontline medical personnel in Wisconsin began getting COVID-19 vaccinations after Dec. 18, 2020.

According to the Marathon County COVID-19 dashboard, the county on Monday had 12,561 people with the coronavirus, an increase of 157 as of Friday. The number of deaths, 185, remains stable. Hospitalizations since Friday have increased by two to 538.
