Spencer firemen fight house blaze

A rural Marshfield couple has been displaced after a fire gutted their home on the evening of Nov. 15.

Spencer Fire Chief Jason Foth said the couple was not home at the time of the fire, and a neighbor reported it about 5:38 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene at 106620 26 Road south of the village, the blaze was already well established.

“When we got there, the back of the house was heavily involved in fire, both the exterior and interior,” Foth said. “We hit the fire from the outside first and then did an interior attack. It was kind of a tough fire to get at.”

Two cats and a parrot were lost in the fire. The homeowners arrived while the fire department was on scene. They are receiving Red Cross assistance for lodging.

Foth said the first floor of the structure sustained extensive damage, and fire and water damage spread to the rest of the house.

Significant winds on Sunday did not do firefighters any favors as they attempted to put down the flames.

“It was fairly windy which hampered our efforts,” Foth said. “It kind of drove the fire back into the home.”
