Fire, crashes erupt Friday at Central WI Raceway
By Jodi Leu

Thrills and spills were on tap for fans and some unfortunate drivers Friday night at Central Wisconsin Raceway in Unity. The night’s events were sponsored by Mid-Wisconsin Beverage and WAXX 104.5 FM Radio with tons of AMP and Dale Earnhardt Jr. giveaways. Motorcycles were also on hand to entertain the crowd. Winners in the Wissota classes included Cory Hanson, Jared Loos, John Fiern and Jed Moore.
The pure stocks have struggled in car count all season but with local tracks off for the night, this gave several drivers the chance to give CWR a try. Ron Hoffman and Nick Field led the nice field of pure stocks to the green. Field jumped out to the lead and prove to be too strong for the rest of the field making his first visit a good one and taking the win. CWR regular Cody Kummer was in second and Hoffman in third.
The street stock feature saw a few drivers make their way to try CWR for the first time this year. Chris Poff and Scott Miller led the field to the green flag with heat winner Butch Kummer and always hard-charging Ryan Lindner close behind. Miller jumped out to the lead with Kummer tight behind him. On lap two the two drivers came together in turn one and both were tagged with the caution. On the restart Cory Hanson had a great jump on Lindner to take the lead. Hanson would not be denied the win in his first appearance at CWR this season as he made the trip worth it. Ryan Lindner finished second and Butch Kummer worked his way back to finish third.
The Wissota Midwest modifieds had a strong field of cars starting the feature race. Randy Bargender and Dave Williams showed the way to the green flag with heat winner Mike Grosbier and Dorchester’s Nate Thums following in the second row. Williams got the jump on Bargender to take the lead with Bargender in second and Nick Lindner moving into third after starting fifth. A caution brought out by Paul Socwell on lap three slowed the field.
After the restart Nick Lindner got turned around in the three-four corner collecting several cars to bring out another caution and ending the night for Brad Hudson, Nate Thums and McAdam Kensmoe with heavy damage to all involved. As the racing resumed Jared Loos grabbed the lead from Williams and the rest of the field was left chasing. Another caution flag flew on lap seven for Randy Bargender ending his night early. Loos got a good restart, and the rest of the race went without a caution giving Jared Loos the win followed by Andy Karl in second and Nick Lindner in third.
The Wissota super stocks had a slim field of cars with only three drivers making the night events. John Feirn and Matt McEathron were on the front row with last week’s feature winner Lance Leu close behind. Feirn and Leu charged hard into the first corner on the start with Leu getting loose giving the advantage to Feirn. Feirn held the lead throughout the race, and a late caution gave Leu the chance but Feirn was able to hold him off to take the victory followed by Leu in second and McEathron in third.
The Wissota modifieds proved not to be a race for the weary. Jed Moore and Kevin Rogers led the field to the green flag. The race was caution-filled with the first one coming on lap one. Another caution flew on lap three and again on lap six. All of these cautions would prove to be minor compared to the one that would end the race for the night.
As Steve Bangart and Mike Bauer were racing hard coming into turn one, both drivers collided sending Bangart crashing hard into the wall and bringing down several feet of fencing. When the car came to a rest, it burst into flames with all track personnel running to put it out and get the driver removed from his mangled machine. Bangart emerged from the car safely to the cheers of the startled fans and other drivers. The fire was quickly put out but it was determined that time had expired on the modified feature with only six laps in the books. Jed Moore would get the win with Kevin Rogers in second and Scott Duval taking third.
With the protective fence needing a lot more repair than what the track workers could get done in a timely manner, the decision was made to run the remaining Hornet feature next week. Next week’s races will feature Bud Lite Ladies Night with all Ladies getting in for half price. This will also be the last regular Friday night event at Central Wisconsin Raceway for 2008 with the next race slated for Saturday, Oct. 4, with the Ghost and Goblins Challenge Race.
