Good economic news is not always easy to come by, let alone good economic news coming out of the windows and doors sector of the economy.
With housing a focal point of the current national recession, the news coming out of the window industry in recent months has been less than rosy. The ongoing troubles with large amounts of existing housing stock in some portions of the country will continue to cause issues for the industry for some time to come. With so much of our area's local economy dealing with the manufacture of windows and doors, any downturn in that portion of the economy is felt strongly here.
For this reason, any positive stories in the window and door world are very welcome and when the good news comes from a company that not too long ago was on the rocks, the news is even more welcome.
The good news was coming on strong at Hurd Windows and Doors (HWD Acquisitions) in Medford last week with the ribbon cutting ceremony marking the substantial completition of a multi-million dollar investment in upgrading the company's Medford facility and company leaders outlining their plans to not only survive the current slump in the window industry but to grow into new markets.
For 90 years, Hurd has been a household name in the Medford community and last summer the company committed to a future in Medford as they worked to consolidate operations at Medford and Merrill into a central location.
As company president Dominic Truniger noted to the crowd of local business and civic leaders at last week's ceremony, Hurd has rewritten its headlines from the brink of shutting down a few years ago, through a bankruptcy reorganization and now it is a leaner company poised to take advantage of opportunities to tap into the $7 billion refit and remodeling sector of the construction market. This impressive achievement is testament to the work done by the management team and the investors who saw the gem ready for a polish and who weren’t afraid to make the investment to make the gem glow.
Hurd's management team is hoping to continue to carve the company's global market niche in the $750,000 and above home market with a commitment to quality and workmanship and expand with new innovations in the window industry.
A bright future for Hurd, like any area manufacturer, translates to a bright future for Medford and bodes well for the eventual economic recovery of the entire region.
Hurd's management team, owners and employees have shown it is possible, even in bleak economic times to rewrite the headlines into a brighter future.
