Counterfeit $20s showing up in Medford

The Star News
December 3, 2009 —
The Medford Police Department is investigating several reports of counterfeit $20 bills being passed in Medford and the surrounding area.
Medford Police Chief Ken Coyer said Wednesday local businesses should be diligent in checking $20 bills to be sure they are real. Most of the fake bills so far have been passed at low-light business settings such as taverns and restaurants.
Coyer said businesses can use simple steps to make sure the currency being taken in is the real thing. Special markers that can detect suspect bills are one method to check currency and can be purchased at local businesses.
Another way to check authenticity is by using a drop of water. Coyer said on counterfeit bills, water will make the ink run. Other ways to tell if bills are genuine is by checking for imbedded red and blue fibers, watermarks and the quality of the paper and printing.
If you have received a bill you suspect to be counterfeit, contact the Medford Police Department at 715-748-2200.
