February 18, 2010 — Plans are proceeding for the construction of a new water tower in the Village of Gilman. A February 24 docket meeting is planned to begin looking at bidding the project out. Construction would begin this year and be completed in 2011.
The new tower will be located in the village industrial park near the Gilman Care Center. The area is part of a tax incremental district, so the village can tap into that reserve to help pay for the costs. The village will receive a USDA Rural Development Grant for $155,000 or approximately 22 percent of the estimated cost. Village clerk Candice Grunseth said the grant and TID monies will allow the village to complete the project while keeping the rate increases in the normal 3 percent range.
The tower will be a 100,000 gallon capacity, more than double the maximum output of the 81-year-old tower now in place near the school district complex. The village has moved toward the water tower project after estimates for the repainting of the old tower came in high. The estimate for painting the outside of the tower was in the $200,000 neighborhood and painting the inside of the tank was expected to cost $50,000. Demolition of the old tower is part of the construction estimate for the new tower.
