Garden tour overflows with history and fun connections

Although it’s a few weeks later than normal

By Ginna Young

Although it’s a few weeks later than normal, that won’t stop the Petals, Pumps and Pick-ups Garden Tour from showcasing four Cornell gardens. Organized by the Green Team Garden Club, the event takes place Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets are available at Cornell Chiropractic and vintage pick-up trucks will be parked at several of the locations for viewing.

One garden this year, is right in the center of the city, belonging to Mel and Thelma Villarta, at 112 South Third Street.

Mel works 12-hour shifts, but manages to squeeze in time to perfect his flower beds of cone flowers, alliums and roses. Decorative bicycles hold pots and hanging baskets of flowers, lending contrast to the distressed metal.
