Hanson New Winner In Red Cedar Speedway Finale
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, August 19 – Mark Hanson in the Modifieds and Brent Voeltz in the Hornets became first time winners at the Red Cedar Speedway on the final night of the regular season at the Dunn County oval. Other winners on a cool and breezy Friday night included Ashley Anderson, Shane Kisling and Matt Leer.
Wayne Stricker and Dave Baxter paced the field for the Modified feature race with Baxter edging into the early lead. However, Hanson quickly moved up from his second row starting spot to challenge Baxter, and following an early yellow flag, Hanson swept past Baxter on the cushion to take over the lead. Brandon Jensen and Jesse Glenz also moved into contention but when Glenz was turned around in turn three, the yellow flew again.
Hanson continued to show the way as he powered around the high side of the track and he gradually pulled away from the field. Craig Thatcher was also working his way forward after starting in the fourth row and he closed in to challenge Jensen. Brent Prochnow was also flying to the front after starting deep in the field. While the battle for second and third continued, Hanson was long gone as he had nearly a straightaway on the field at Rick Cook’s checkered flag. Jensen fought off all challenges to hold on to the second spot ahead of Thatcher with Prochnow and Mike Anderson completing the top five.
Voeltz stopped the five race winning streak of Eric Schultz in the Hornets, driving past Brenden Uetz on the first lap and then leading the rest of the race. Uetz held on for second at the finish with Jay Welk, Dave Clausen and Tracy Hallquist completing the top five.
Action got hot and heavy in the Late Model feature race, with a midrace collision eliminated the top two runners and opening the door for Anderson to take his second Red Cedar win of the year. Scott Duval and Kerry Hanson battled in the early going for the front spot in the main event, with Duval eventually using the high side to edge past Hanson. Once in front, Scott opened up some distance on the field as a good battle raged for position behind him. Jake Redetzke picked up the pace from the second row, and moved into the runner up slot. He then began to gradually reel in the leader, as Anderson, Jake Hartung and Scott Gilberts also battled for position.
Redetzke caught Duval for the lead near the halfway point of the event, and Jake made several attempts to pass Scott, only to be turned back. Finally, Jake was able to get to the inside of Duval and dive into the lead, only to slide up the track in turn four. Duval dove to the inside of Redetzke down the front chute in and attempt to reclaim the top spot, and as they attempted to set their cars for turn one, they came together with Redetzke spinning backward up the track and slamming into the turn one wall. Redetzke was done with front end damage, and Duval, judged to be at fault was sent to the back of the back but he opted to pull into the pits instead.
This gave Hanson the lead on the restart but Anderson used the top side to blow past Kerry and take over the lead. Once in front, Ashley pulled away in the final laps to record the win. The battle for second remained spirited with Hartung edging Chad Mahder, Mike Prochnow and Gilberts.
Kisling won his second Red Cedar feature of the season in a hard fought battle with Jesse Redetzke and Ben Hillman. Redetzke started on the pole and battled with Luke Plank before he was able to claim the top spot. Kisling started right behind Redetzke and after passing Plank, he moved to the high side to challenge Redetzke for the lead. They raced side by side for a couple of laps before Kisling was finally able to edge past and take over the lead. Hillman was also heading to the front after starting in the third row, and he took over the third spot and moved into to challenge Redetzke. Kisling had opened up some distance on the field, but as the laps started to wind down, the second and third place cars started to close on him. Hillman made an attempt to get under Redetzke for second but was repelled. The pack was within a car length or two by the final lap, and when Kisling jumped the cushion on the final corner, it made for an exciting scramble to the line, but Shane prevailed over Jesse and Ben to take the win with Plank and Steve Thomas completing the top five.
The nonstop Midwest Modified feature saw Leer come from the fourth row to take his fifth Red Cedar win of the year, tying him with Kevin Adams and Jason Havel as the biggest winners at the track in 2011. Clark Swartz made a great move on the opening lap as he moved from the second row to take the lead before a lap could be completed. Justin Supri, Grant Southworth and the Smith brothers were all battling furiously for position but both Leer and Shane Halopka were able to navigate through the traffic and move into the second and third places eventually. When Swartz left the bottom side open, Leer was able to drive under him and take over the lead.
Halopka was really moving up also, as he took second and began to challenge Leer for the lead. However, when the top runners got into traffic, Leer was able to take advantage and open up some distance over the pack. Halopka cut the lead down again, but Matt had enough cushion to drive home for the win. Swartz held on for a strong third, with Supri and Jake Smith next in line.
Havel started on the pole of a short field of Pure Stocks and quickly established a comfortable margin on the pack. Jeremy Dahl drove as hard as he could, but he wasn’t able to close the distance as Havel went nonstop for the win. Chris Wert raced home third with Jason Supri and Jason Stevens chasing.
On a season when the speedway suffered through six rainouts, the track will now be silent until September 23-24 when the grand finale will be the annual Punky Manor Challenge of Champions race. Under a new format initiated this year and only announced this week, classes have been added to this year’s show and the order of events has been changed. For the first time ever, the Late Models will run two full shows at the Punky, having qualifying heats and feature races on both Friday and Saturday night. The Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks and Modifieds will run their qualifying events on Friday and the B features and feature races will be contested on Saturday night. Also, the WISSOTA sanctioned Street Stocks will run a full race program on Friday night and the Pure Stocks will run a full program on Saturday night. Race time will be 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. More details about the purse structure and admission prices will be announced shortly. Check the speedway website at www.redcedarracing.com for that information.

Track Champions Crowned at Red Cedar Speedway
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, August 12 – The rains that caused a lot of tracks to cancel Friday night missed the Menomonie area, and it was a pleasant night to crown Season Champions in all five divisions that routinely race at the speedway. The proud winners who can call themselves Red Cedar Speedway 2011 Season Champions include Chad Mahder, Mark Gerth, Tom Karis, Matt Leer and Gunnar Watkins. Mahder, Gerth and Leer were also point champions at the track while the other two victors were upset winners.
For Mahder, despite being the point champion, it was his first win at the track in 2011 but he made it definitive as he dominated the Late Model main event from start to finish. He sat on the pole and jumped into an immediate lead over Ashley Anderson in what turned out to be a nonstop twenty lap contest. Anderson tried to stay with Mahder but he slipped up the track and Mike Prochnow was right there to take advantage and move into second. Prochnow tried to stay with Mahder, but Chad had his car hooked up Friday, and he drove away from the field, eventually stretching his lead to nearly a straightaway. The best race was for the fourth spot where John Kaanta dogged Jake Hartung lap after lap before finally ducking under Jake on the last corner of the race to take the position. Prochnow settled for a strong second place finish with Anderson third as Mahder’s decision to pull his old car out and run that proved to be a wise one. The Late Model division has proved to be the most competitive in 2011 with Mahder becoming the seventh different feature winner in the division at the speedway.
Gerth held the pole for the Modified main event in what turned out to be another nonstop feature race. While Gerth held the pole, and jumped into the initial lead, Kevin Adams used the high side to race past Gerth and lead the first couple of laps. Gerth remained solid in the low groove however, and as the outside groove gradually went away, Gerth steadily moved back beside Adams and gradually drove under him for the lead. Adams tried his best to stay with Gerth, but the low groove was the place to be and with Gerth a master of the low side, he gradually extended his advantage over Adams. As the leaders fought for position, Mike Anderson and Ross Prochnow also ran side by side as they fought for the third spot. They jockeyed for the position back and forth with them trading the advantage for most of the race.
Gerth continued to stretch his lead as he built it up to half a straightaway with his only worries coming when he got into lapped traffic and he had to change his line. Adams was able to close the gap then, but Mark was able to get past the back markers and once in open traffic, he again stretched his margin as he drove on for his second Red Cedar win of 2011. Adams settled for third with Prochnow moving ahead of Anderson in the late going for third. Brandon Jensen completed the top five.
The third point champion to also claim a feature win Friday was Leer and he had to withstand the race long challenges of Shane Halopka to claim the title. Leer started on the pole but had Cory Crapser immediately challenging for the lead. However, Crapser tried the high side and that didn’t work for him, as he gave the second spot up to Halopka before he could get back in line. The one driver seemingly able to make the top side work was Clark Swartz who came up to challenge Halopka for that spot.
The Midwest Modified feature was plagued by five yellow flags, four of which came in the second half of the event and kept the field tightly bunched and the drivers anxious. On each restart, Leer would continue to protect the bottom lane with Halopka trying to get a nose under Matt and sneak into the lead. With all the yellows in the late going, Halopka continued to press for the lead but Leer was able to repel his advances. On the last sprint to the finish , Shane gave it his best effort and nearly got under Leer, but Matt once again fought him off as he drove home for his fourth win of the year at Red Cedar. Crapser was able to fight his way back up to third at the finish while Mark Thomas gradually worked his way up after starting eleventh on the grid to get past Swartz in the late going for fourth.
While most of the racers found the low groove to be the best way around the track Friday, the Super Stocks somehow managed to make the high groove the best route. At least Tom Karis was able to do that and the result was a track title for the Menomonie veteran.
Ben Hillman was scheduled to start on the pole, but the point champion hurt his motor while winning a heat race and he had to scratch out of the main. This moved Steve Thomas up to the pole and he took the early lead. However, Karis , who started outside row one moved to the cushion and he was able to keep his car straight and tight up agains the wall and gain the momentum he needed to drive past the sliding Thomas and take over the lead. Thomas tried hard to fight back, but when he started to slide out of his groove, Karis was able to edge away from him.
The second half of the race got bogged down, and also had the biggest crash of the night by far. Following a slowdown for debris on the track, the restart saw a tightly packed field thunder into turn one. At a most unfortunate time, Shane Kisling was reported to have broken a brake rotor, and he crashed at full speed into the car of Aaron Wilson, shoving Wilson into the first turn wall where his car climbed high in the air and then flipped. With no where to go, several other cars on the high side of the track plowed into the wreck, creating a massive pile up. While Luke Plank limped away from the scene with minor injuries, no other injuries were reported but the cars of Wilson, Kisling, Jesse Redetzke, Plank, Brad Johnson and Brad Edington were all eliminated.
The three lap sprint to the finish saw Thomas continue to press Karis for the lead while Jason Forehand, who started sixteenth on the grid, slipped past Mike Keller to take third and was on the charge.
Thomas gave it his best effort to try and get under Karis at the end, but Tom continued to work the high side and he drove on for his second win of the year at Red Cedar. Thomas’s all out effort on the final corner left the low side open and Forehand ducked under him to steal second at the line, with Keller and Bart Steffen completing the top five.
Watkins finished eighth in track points in the Pure Stock class and started in the third row of the Pure Stock championship run, a race that was ultimately decided in the tech area following the contest. Jason Havel sat on the pole but in a great move on the opening lap, Bill Skoug , who started in the second row, moved to the high side and drove around Jeremy Dahl, Chaz Ducommun and Havel as the leaders went four wide to take the top spot.
Havel fought back and led briefly , but Skoug continued to drive up the track and was able to again move past Havel who slid out in the turns. Havel continued to press for the lead, and when he again slid up the track, Watkins was right there to take over the second spot. From this point, Watkins tried to track down the leader, but Skoug had his car in the groove and drove away from the pack for the apparent win.
However, in the tech inspection following the event, Skoug’s car was disqualified for unauthorized springs and shocks on the car, handing the track championship and his second win of the year at Red Cedar to Watkins. Havel settled for second with Ducommun, Dahl and Brandon Lofgren completing the top five.
The speedway will conclude the 2011 regular season next weekend. On Friday, August 19th, a regular program with racing in all five classes will be held with the lineups based on point average. Then, on Saturday, August 20th, the second enduro of the season will be held at the track. The racing season will conclude on Friday and Saturday, September 23-24 with the annual Punky Manor Challenge of Champions race sponsored by Budweiser and Tim’s Automotive Machine. The exact format and competing classes for that weekend have yet to be determined with an announcement expected within a week.

Mark Hessler Tops Red Cedar Modifieds; Points Champions Decided
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, August 5 – Mark Hessler won his first feature race in two years in topping the WISSOTA Modified feature event to highlight the racing program Friday night at the Red Cedar Speedway. Other feature winners on the last regular Friday night of racing in the 2011 racing season were Steve Thomas, Shane Halopka, Bill Skoug and Eric Schultz.
The point championships were also on the line Friday. Chad Mahder clinched the Late Model title last weekend as the Late Models had the night off Friday, and Jeremy Dahl had such a big lead all he needed to do was take the green flag in the Pure Stock feature to assure himself of that title. However , the other three divisions were very close and Friday night’s features would decide those four titlists.
Hessler led all the way to win his first Modified feature race at Red Cedar in the last two seasons as he started on the outside pole and jumped into the early lead. Kevin Adams and Mark Gerth were battling for the point title with Adams holding a two point lead as the green flag dropped for the main event. Steve Hallquist and Mark Hanson challenged Hessler early while most of the other action involved Adams. Racing his way up from the fourth row, Adams was slashing through traffic when he and Brent Prochnow got together with both then hitting the wall in turn three. Prochnow was done while Adams limped to the work area to replace two flat tires.
Hessler continued to lead on the green but it was only one lap later when Bryan Nayes got into the wall in turn three and Adams, with no where to go, plowed into him, necessitating another trip to the work area. Hessler continued to lead with Ross Prochnow now on the move into second and Gerth was gradually working his way to the front also.
One more yellow occurred with six laps complete when once again Adams was the third party in the collision after Steve Lavasseur and Wayne Stricker got together initially.
The last nine laps went nonstop and Hessler pulled away from the field as his car was working excellently in the top groove. Ross Prochnow remained a solid second and while Hanson made a last lap attempt to slide under Gerth for third, it failed and ultimately provided Gerth with his razor slim margin of victory in the points.
Adams came from the back of the pack with half his body bashed in and the other half flapping in the wind, but when he couldn’t make a last lap pass on Mike Anderson for fifth and Gerth held off Hanson, Gerth won the title by a mere point.
Thomas did all he could to win the Super Stock point title, as he won his third main event of the season but it proved to not be quite enough as Ben Hillman raced his way far enough forward to edge Thomas by four points. Brad Johnson started on the pole and with his finest run of the year, led the first five laps of the event as Thomas, Mike Keller and Jason Forehand chased him. Unfortunately for Johnson, his motor didn’t hold together past the five lap mark and with oil and smoke all over the back chute , he rolled to a halt.
Thomas took the lead on the restart, and riding the cushion, pulled away from the pack. Forehand pulled in to challenge Keller for second, but a yellow for a grinding three car crash on the back chute saved Mike while eliminating the cars of Tom Karis, Jay Quilling and Bernie Christiansen.
Thomas continued to lead on the green as both he and Forehand, still alive in the points race, tried to do the best they could to improve their position. However, Hillman got up on the cushion and moved forward well from his fifth row start, and when he drove past Forehand in the late going to take third, he guaranteed that the title would be his. Keller held on for second in the feature while Shane Kisling rounded out the top five.
The Midwest Modified race was just as close as when the green flag flew for the feature race, Cory Crapser held a one point lead over Matt Leeer. Mark Thomas started out with his best run of the year as he took the early lead with a real battle going on behind him for second. As Thomas continued to hold the top spot, Nick Koehler, Kevin Smeltzer, Zach Manley, Justin Supri and Clark Swartz all battled for position with Shane Halopka moving up from the fourth row and Crapser and Leer also advancing.
Two early yellows kept the field bunched but each time Thomas would continue to lead with Manley moving into second and putting on the most pressure. Finally, Zach would get to the low side of Thomas and take over the lead. The race remained very competitive as Supri moved to the cushion and really was on a charge as he raced into second. Then it was Halopka’s turn as he found some racing room in the middle of the track and was able to split Supri and Manley and take over the top spot. Meanwhile Leer and Crapser were both moving to the front too as they carried on their personal battle.
Halopka took his fourth Red Cedar win of the year, tops for the division as he held off the heavy challenges of Supri for the top spot. Leer found a late opening and moved into third and when Crapser got edged by Manley for fourth by inches at the line, that gave the title to Leer by a single point.
Todd Roshell, in his first appearance of the year at Red Cedar , took the early lead in the Pure Stock finale with Gunnar Watkins chasing him. Jason Supri, Kory Hathaway and Dahl were all on the move from farther back in the pack but the top two had established a good early lead.
That all changed in a split second as Roshell grenaded a motor down the back chute, dumping liquid all over the track while at the same time Watkins slowed with steam coming from under the hood of his car, with both the top runners done at the same time.
Chaz Ducommun inherited the lead and held off Skoug for a lap before Bill moved to the high side and drove past the leader to claim the front spot. Ducommun tried to stay with Skoug, but Bill had the groove covered as he drove on for his third Red Cedar win of 2011. Ducommun held on for second while Dahl, who won only one main event but was remarkably consistent all year, settled for third and the point title. Hathaway and Rod Ryba completed the top five.
The Hornets have raced at Red Cedar five times in 2011 and the #7s car has sat in victory lane all five times. Friday Eric Schultz won another easy win although for the first time this year he didn’t lead every lap as Jeremy Johnson led the opening round before Schultz blew past him and disappeared into the Dunn County night. Brenden Uetz ended up claiming the runner up honors with Brent Voeltz, Ben Passa and Jerry Zebro completing the top five.
Next Friday night, August 12th, 24/7 Telecom and Keyes Chevytown present the 2011 Season Championship races. The Late Models will be back and all five classes will be in action with the heat races lined up by points the drivers have earned all season and the feature races determined by the finishing order in the heats. Race time is 7 p.m.

Mars Edges Prochnow For Red Cedar Speedway Win
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, July 29 – For the first time in a number of years, the Red Cedar Speedway raced during the annual Dunn County Fair and a huge crowd was on hand to enjoy the racing action. There were several close finishes Friday but the highlight event was the Late Model feature where Jimmy Mars and Mike Prochnow battled it out to the wire with Mars taking the win. Other winners Friday included Kevin Adams, Jason Forehand, Shane Halopka and Jason Havel.
The Late Model main event went nonstop with Jake Redetzke, fresh off a $10,000 win last weekend pulling ahead of Ashley Anderson to take the early lead. Scott Gilberts and Prochnow were close behind and challenging while Mars was slowly working his way up after starting in the fourth row. Prochnow picked up the pace and moved into the runner up position, where he began to put heavy pressure on Redetzke for the lead. Jake pushed up the track in turn one and Mike dropped under him and took over the top spot. After that, Prochnow moved back to the cushion and started to put distance on the field.
Mars began to move up with greater ungency, as he raced past Gilberts and then Redetzke to take over the second spot. However, he was still half a straightaway behind Prochnow with the laps running down. However, Mars really started driving deep into the corners and he rapidly closed on Prochnow, and it was clear it would be a close finish.
Jimmy drove low in turn one and edged ahead of Prochnow, only to slide up the track and give Mike an opening on the low side. As they raced to the white flag, they were side by side but Prochnow now had the inside line. Powering off the cushion, Mars remained even as they raced down the back chute. Mars remained high on the track and got a great run off turn four while Prochnow couldn’t hold the bottom and Mars accelerated ahead by a car length or two to take the win as the crowd was on its collective feet. It was Mars’ third win of the year at Red Cedar, and he is the only driver in the Late Models to have been able to win more than once in 2011. Redetzke held on for third with Gilberts and Rick Hanestad completing the top five.
Adams continued his assault on area tracks with his Modified, winning his fifth feature win at Red Cedar, tops for any driver in any division and nineteenth overall. He started eighth on the grid but quickly made some strong moves as he cut through the middle of the pack and advanced to the third spot. The lead was held by Mark Hessler who was also receiving a hard challenge from Ross Prochnow.
Spins on lap three and four bunched the field, with the top three cars battling on each restart. Following the second yellow, Adams made a strong move low in turn one and was able to slide up the track and edge into the lead while Prochnow used the high side to take second. The top two then began to pull away from the field as both moved to the cushion. Hessler was receiving a strong challenge from Mark Gerth and Craig Thatcher for the third spot as Adams gradually began to pull away from Prochnow.
A late yellow slowed the action again, with Adams again drawing away from Prochnow on the green. Kevin Eder came from no where to charge into third on the restart as he used the extreme high side of the track. Adams kept Prochnow several car lengths behind as he completed the win while Eder held off a last lap challenge from Gerth for third with Hessler rounding out the top five.
The Super Stock feature was a three car battle before Forehand came on to win his second main of the year at Red Cedar. Tom Karis sat on the pole and beat Tommy Richards into the first turn to take the lead. Karis was working the cushion, and he put some distance on the pack early. Shane Kisling then moved into second and closed on Karis. Shane tried several times to get past Karis, but Tom continued to get a good run off the top side and held off all Shane’s challenges.
A lap six yellow for debris bunched the field, and Forehand, who was running third put on a charge as he squeezed past Kisling on the green to take over second and then began to move in on Karis. Forehand then moved in on Karis and the race was on for the lead. Back and forth they went, Forehand first getting slightly ahead on the low side but then Karis charging back on the corners working off the cushion. They continued to jockey for the lead, with Forehand finally edging ahead with only a few laps left. Karis gave it everything he had, but he came up just short as Forehand drove home for the win. Kisling ran third for the remainder of the race with Aaron Wilson and Richards next in line.
Halopka recovered from near disaster to win his third Midwest Modified feature race of the year. Jake Smith was the initial leader with Travis Anderson, Jordan Hessler and Josh Smith challenging him. Halopka, Matt Leer and Cory Crapser were all on the charge from the fourth and fifth row toward the front. Halopka had moved into third when he got too high and bounced off the wall, losing several positions. However, a fortuitous yellow flag for a spin saved him, and he moved back up to third for the restart. Halopka then put on the pressure, as he drove under Jake Smith to take over the top spot.
Crapser moved past Leer for second, and tried to track down Halopka for the lead. However, Shane was in the groove and he withstood all challenges to record the win. Leer settled for third with Josh Smith and Anderson next in line.
The Pure Stock feature also had a good battle for the lead, with three drivers fighting it out right to the checkered flag. Jeremy Dahl eased past Gunnar Watkins to take the early lead with Bill Skoug and Havel moving in to provide a challenge also. Havel was able to get under Skoug to take over second and he then closed on Dahl for the lead. They battled side by side for a couple of laps until Havel was able to get under Dahl and take over the top spot. However, Skoug was not done as he moved up the track and found success as he charged back up to make it a three car battle once again. Havel continued to run the bottom and Skoug moved past Dahl and then closed beside Havel as the race neared its conclusion.
Skoug threw caution to the wind as he tried to work the high side on the final lap. However, he slipped up just enough that Havel was able to take the advantage and he held on for his fourth Red Cedar win of 2011. Behind the top three, Dustin Doughty made a late charge to take the fourth spot with Chaz Ducommun next in line.
Racing action continues next Friday night at 7 p.m. with Coca Cola night at the track. The Late Models have the night off while the other four classes will conclude their points season at the speedway as the year rapidly winds down. On August 12th the Season Championships will be held in all five classes and the regular season concludes with a full show on August 19th.

Scott Gilberts Tops Red Cedar Speedway Late Models
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, July 22 – Scott Gilberts won a nearly race long battle with Ashley Anderson and claimed his first Late Model feature win of the 2011 season Friday night at the Red Cedar Speedway. Gilberts was joined in victory lane for the first time also by Pure Stock driver Gunnar Watkins while Kevin Adams, Steve Thomas, Cory Crapser and Eric Schultz all returned to the winner’s circle.
Gilberts and Caley Emerson battled in the early laps for the lead with Gilberts finally using the outside line to take the top spot where he was quickly joined by Chad Mahder and Anderson in a continued battle for the lead. Mahder took a shot at the leader but couldn’t complete the pass and that gave Anderson his opening to drive to the low side and move into second. He pulled up beside Gilberts on several occasions but just couldn’t complete to move into first.
Yellows for minor spins on lap eight and eleven broke up the battle briefly but once under green again, Anderson would pull up beside Gilberts in turn two on every lap but Scott was superior on the cushion in turn four and would again edge back in front. This continued throughout the race but late in the contest Mahder would rally to close and make it a three car duel. Anderson gave it his best shot on the final lap, but Gilberts held him off. Mahder also blasted the cushion on the final corner and was able to edge Anderson by inches for second with Cory Mahder and Mike Prochnow also in the top five.
Watkins has had a whole season’s worth of mechanical issues already this year, and the second year Pure Stock driver was looking to turn around his bad luck with a front row starting position Friday. He fought off Jeremy Dahl to take the early lead and then had Dahl struck to his rear bumper the rest of the way. Dahl continued to pressure Watkins through two yellow flags but Gunnar continued to hold the lead. Storming up through the field was rookie driver Tony Dubois and he got under Dahl to take over the second spot. Watkins was fighting a badly overheating car in the final laps but he managed to stay in the groove and fight off the challenges of Dubois to take his initial win of the year at Red Cedar. Dahl settled for third in the running order while Krysta Swearingen charged up from the sixth row to take fourth ahead of Kory Hathaway.
Adams became the top winner at the speedway in 2011 when he won his fourth feature event in the Modifieds, in a tough battle with another rookie, Mark Gerth. Gerth had taken the lead for the green as fought off Luke Schilling and Craig Thatcher to run up front in the early laps. Adams was on the charge from the start, quickly moving up from the fourth row into contention with Tony Bahr close behind.
Gerth continued to hold the top spot as Adams moved into third and a yellow came out for a spin. Adams was able to slip past Thatcher on the green and when the yellow came out one lap later for a stalled car, that put Adams right behind the leader. Adams got a great run off turn two and ducked to the inside of Gerth to take the lead, but Mark wasn’t ready to give up and he returned the favor on the next lap as he reclaimed the top spot.
Adams kept persisting though, and down the back chute he was able to edge past Gerth and slide up in front of him to claim the lead. Once in front, he was gradually able to edge away and increase his margin. Bahr had charged on the bottom on the last yellow and had moved into third, but in the late going he faded somewhat with Thatcher and Mike Anderson able to pass him in the final standings.
Steve Thomas won his second Super Stock feature event of the year but first since opening night as he got to the front early and fought off a tough challenge from Ben Hillman for the win. Thomas rode the cushion and built up a big lead over the field while Hillman fought his way into the second spot after starting in the third row. Thomas’ big lead evaporated due to a mid race yellow flag and he was in for a battle the rest of the way.
Both the leaders were high on the cushion with Hillman dogging Thomas’ every move. Meanwhile, Luke Plank and Jason Forehand had found the low side to their liking, and they started to close the gap the top two runners had built up. Late in the race, Thomas felt the pressure as Hillman attempted to stick his nose under the leader, but Steve held tough in his line to take the win over all efforts by Hillman. Cory Davis worked his way into a top five finish late in the contest.
Travis Anderson led the majority of the Midwest Modified feature but in the late going he fell victim to the pressure of Crapser as Cory took his third win of the year at Red Cedar. Anderson was up on the cushion and led a trio of Bloomer drivers, Grant Southworth, Clark Swartz and Nick Koehler in the early going. After a lap one spin slowed the action, the rest of the race went nonstop and there was some wild battling going on in the pack as drivers threw caution to the wind in an effort to get to the front in the balanced field. Anderson continued to hold off the pressure as Swartz moved into the second spot and took a run at the leader.
Suddenly, Crapser, who had started in the fifth row, came charging up using the low side of the track. Making his car work where the others couldn’t his “hell for leather” charge on the low side got him into second, and from there he drove under Anderson to take over the lead.
Crapser then pulled away and Anderson started to struggle in the corners on the last few laps, surrendering second to Swartz and then third to a late charge by Matt Leer while Southworth completed the top five.
The Hornets have raced at Red Cedar four times this year and every one of those races have found the #7s car in victory lane. Friday Eric Schultz drove the car and led from virtually the start to record an easy victory over Jeremy Johnson, Jay Welk, Jerry Zebro and Brent Voeltz.
Next Friday the Dunn County Fair will be on at the Rec Park and for the first time in a number of years, stock car racing will be a part of the Fair. A full, five division race program will be held on Friday, July 29th and it offers a great economical bargain for race fans. Everyone that enters the Fair will be charged $1 but then tickets to the race program will be only $5, a great savings for the fans. A big crowd is expected so race fans are encouraged to get to the track early and enjoy the Dunn County Fair before the first green flag flies at 7 p.m.

Red Cedar Speedway Rained Out
By Ed Reichert
Menomonie WI, July 15 – There was lots of rain in west central Wisconsin on Friday, so it came as no surprise when the announcement was made that Dean & Sue’s night at the Red Cedar Speedway had been rained out. It was the seventh weather related cancellation of racing during the 2011 racing season to date.
Next Friday night, the Red Cedar Racing Association will attempt to get another show in. Scheduled for Friday July 22 will be a regular five class program featuring WISSOTA sanctioned Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds along with the Red Cedar Pure Stocks. The Hornets will also make their fourth appearance of the year at the track. Dirt Track Specialties along with Baxter’s Speed Shop will be the presenting sponsors on what will be Fan Appreciation night at the track with special activities planned to go along with that promotion. Race time is 7 p.m.
